Therapy is deeply personal work. The words you use to
describe your inner world, your emotions, your
relationships, they carry weight. For many
French-speaking Ontarians, doing that work in English
means something gets lost in translation. Not just
linguistically, but emotionally.
If French is your first language, or even just the
language that feels more natural when you're vulnerable,
finding a therapist who can meet you there matters more
than most people realize.
I'm Janelle, a bilingual Registered Psychotherapist
based in Ottawa. I offer psychotherapy in both English
and French, in person and virtually across Ontario.
Here's what I want you to know about finding the right
French-speaking therapist for you.
Why Language Matters in Therapy
Research consistently shows that people express emotions
more naturally and authentically in their first language.
When you're doing the kind of deep, vulnerable work that
therapy requires talking about fear, grief, shame,
relationships, trauma and more, being able to use your most
natural language isn't a luxury. It's clinically
significant.
For Franco-Ontarians in Ottawa and across Ontario,
access to French-language mental health services has
historically been limited. Many French speakers have
had to choose between waiting for a French-speaking
provider or settling for services in English. Neither
option is ideal.
What to Look for in a Bilingual Therapist
Not all bilingual therapists offer the same level of
fluency in both languages, and that matters when
you're choosing someone to do vulnerable work with.
Here are a few things worth asking:
- Is the therapist fully fluent in French, or do they
offer limited conversational French?
- Can sessions be conducted entirely in French if
needed, or only partially?
- Are intake forms, consent documents, and
communications also available in French?
- Can you switch languages mid-session if that feels
more natural?
In my practice, the answer to all of these is yes.
Sessions, documents, and all communication are fully
available in both English and French. Many of my
clients switch between languages naturally throughout
a session, and that's completely welcome.
French-Language Therapy in Ottawa, What's Available
Ottawa has a significant francophone community, and
there are some French-language mental health resources
available. However, wait times for publicly funded
services can be long, and finding a private
French-speaking therapist who also specializes in
your specific concern, eating disorders, child
therapy, anxiety or ADHD can be a real challenge.
If you're looking for a bilingual therapist in Ottawa
who specializes in a particular area, it's worth
narrowing your search by both language and specialty
rather than choosing one over the other.
Areas I Work With in French and English
I offer bilingual psychotherapy for:
- Eating disorders and disordered eating: anorexia,
bulimia, binge eating, body image
- Children ages 7 and up and teens
- Anxiety and depression
- ADHD and neurodivergent support
- Emotion regulation and big life changes
- Relationship difficulties
Sessions are available in person at my Ottawa office
or virtually anywhere in Ontario.
